BY THE TIME I see the credits roll, I know for a fact if the story was worth it. At least to me. When the story’s climax has ended, everything is resolved, and when you see the credits roll, I get that “End Game Feeling”.
THE END GAME Feeling is the emptiness, that moment when you sit back and wonder, “Wow, it’s really over?” When you sit and stare at the last word of the credits, unable to turn off or reset the game, because that would mean it’s truly and finally done. The experience has left you mesmerized, and so engrossed in the world, the tale, and the characters that you don’t want to leave it behind. You want it to continue, to live on, to see what happens next. But it’s over. No matter how many times you flip to the last page of that book, rewind to the last scene of that movie, or rewatch the final episode of that amazing TV show, nothing ever changes.
I LOVE AND HATE that feeling. I love it because when I’ve reached the end of the game/book/movie, and I get the End Game Feeling, I know that it was well worth taking the time to experience it. But at the same time, it’s bitter sweet because I know that it’s over, now just a fond memory that will replay over and over in my mind for years to come. And even if I eventually replay, or reread, or rewatch it again, it’ll never be as amazing as the first time I stepped into that world, dewy eyed, unknowing, and surprised by everything.
AND USUALLY, if by the end I don’t feel that emptiness, the longing to experience more of that world, then it was a waste of my time. I want to take something from the experience, feel something, and be left to ponder all the what ifs and what could be.
TOY STORY 3, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Man in the Iron Mask, Final Fantasy IV-VII-VIII-IX-X, Nights into Dreams, Metal Gear, Doctor Who, the 10th Doctor’s Regeneration, Shawshank Redemption, Psychonauts, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker, Star Wars, Goonies, Stand by Me, Back to the Future, A Wrinkle in Time, Piercing the Darkness, Phantom Brave, Kingdom Hearts, just to name a few, have had that End Game Feeling. Okay, that’s my rant for now. Thank you for your time!
